Description
NAME OF WINE : PLLANA ‘HANS’ OLD VINE GRENACHE
VINTAGE YEAR : 2022
GRAPE VARIETIES RATIO (%) & SOURCE: Grenache Ex Barossa Valley
HARVEST DATE : March 2022
WOOD DETAILS : Matured for 9 months in older puncheons
VINTAGE CONDITIONS:
The 2022 season got off to a wet start and the winter soil water reserves allowed for healthy and happy growth in the early stages of the season. Spring rainfall totals were also above average and mild summer temperatures created an ideal ripening environment, allowing the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity while retaining high natural acidity.
WINEMAKING/VITICULTURE:
This Grenache wine is produced from a variety of vineyards on the Barossa Valley floor. Throughout March, each block was picked and crushed individually (the majority was handpicked). The vinification process consists of a few techniques that include early pick, extended maceration and conventional winemaking. Each style is tailored to maximise the potential of the different vineyards. The natural or “wild” yeasts found on grape skins are allowed to initiate and complete the grape sugar fermentation. After draining and pressing off skins, all batches are racked to older, large format barrels and matured for an additional 9 months before final blending.
TERROIR/SITE:
To produce this wine, we have used a resource of very old, gnarled bush vine Grenache, which produce low yields of concentrated flavour. These bush vines, the growers and the winemaker form a unique alliance that produce the consistent quality of grapes that we seek for this style. A range of terroir can be seen across the different vineyards, from sandy soils to sandy loam to red-brown earth over red clay.
TASTING COMMENTS :
The colour of this 2022 Grenache is bright ruby. Starts with a complex bouquet of ref fruit and wildflowers. With time in the glass, the aromas of raspberry and mulberry with a background of cinnamon and caramel emerge. This light to medium bodied, juicy Grenache exhibits excellent fruit and spice balance, is smooth, textural, and supported by mouth-coating tannins.
This wine was made to be paired with food, best enjoyed with a white pizza base, bechamel, aged gouda cheese, beacon mushrooms and truffle oil. Alternatively, a white pizza base with potato, sage, rosemary, and rock salt could be a perfect vegan match.
